Joining Mensa... FAQs

Skip the FAQs, show me the testing schedule!

  • How can I join Mensa?
By scoring at or above the 98th percentile on an "accepted" I.Q. test.

  • What tests are accepted as proof of eligibility to join?
There are over 200 tests that are accepted by Mensa. The supervisory psychologist at our National Office makes the final decision on which tests are accepted. Go HERE to view the latest list.

  • Does Mensa offer its own qualifying testing?
Yes. Periodically, East Central Ohio Mensa (ECOM) offers a Mensa qualifying test. These are scheduled somewhere in our 14-county area, usually on a Saturday. If you are interested in taking one of our tests, and if you will give us your name and address, e-mail our Proctor Coordinator

  • What is the Mensa test like?
You will actually be taking two tests. One is geared more for those who are verbal and one is more for people who are analytical. The tests will then be sent to our National headquarters to be scored. The National Office will contact you by mail to let you know if you qualify for membership. You only need to qualify on either test to be invited to join Mensa.

  • How long will these tests take?
There will be a short break between the two tests. The entire process will take 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

  • Is there a charge for this?
Yes. To cover the cost of the tests, room expenses, postage, and other expenses, there is a $40.00 fee.

  • How often do you test?
As often as we can. Here is the current schedule of test dates.

  • Can anybody take the test?
No. A person must be 14 years old or older and claim English as their native language for our tests to be valid. Special tests are available for people ineligible for our standard testing.

  • How do I use prior evidence?
The results of a previous IQ test must be sent to the National Office by the counselor or psychologist giving the test. The raw score and percentile should be included. They must use their professional letterhead and the test administrator must sign the letter. If a transcript is sent, it must be certified. If a photocopy is sent, it must be notarized. All documentation will be returned.

  • How can I be notified of the next proctored test session?
    Just e-mail our Proctor Coordinator.

  • What if I take the test and just miss qualifying. Can I take it again?
No. Once you take the proctored test, you cannot take it again. Our advice to you is to either use prior evidence or be tested by a private psychologist.

  • How many people are in East Central Ohio Mensa?
We have approximately 350 members in our chapter.

  • How far does your chapter (ECOM) extend?
Basically, we cover all of northeastern Ohio with the exception of the counties along the lake. They are part of Cleveland Area Mensa. We start at the Ohio/Pennsylvania border and go west to Medina, Ashland, and Bucyrus, and south to New Philadelphia, Millersburg, and Wooster.

  • How large is Mensa?
There are 150 chapters and approximately 50,000 members in the United States. There are over 100,000 members worldwide in over 100 countries.
